Hope Lothrop, the 10th child & 7th son of Capt. Joseph Lothrop (Rev. John,1) & Mary Ansel, was b. of record at Barnstable, Mass. on July 15, 1671, and d. testate at Tolland, Conn. on Oct. 29, 1734, Æ 64. He was the grandson of Rev. John Lothrop, founder of the Barnstable, Mass. Congregational Church. Hope was the only child of his parents to eventually settle at Tolland, Conn.

On Dec. 17, 1696 at Barnstable, Mass. (by Rev. Russell of the Barnstable 1st Chh.), Hope m. Elizabeth Lothrop, his 1st cousin once removed, dau. of Melatiah Lothrop (Thomas,2 Rev. • iii. Rebecca Lothrop, b. Nov. 25, 1701, purportedly d. at Guilford, Conn. on June 22, 1747, Æ 46; m. on May 14, 1719 at Barnstable, Edward Lewis, s. of John Lewis & Elizabeth Huckins. He was b. at Barnstable on Sept. 6, 1697 and d. at Litchfield, Conn. circa 1789.

She was b. at Tolland on Sept. 5, 1726 and d. at Tolland on Sept. 5, 1808, Æ 89." She died on 21 February 1763 at the age of 85 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.²⁶⁵ Cemetery Note: "Elizabeth Lothrop, dau. of Melatiah Lothrop & Sarah Farrar, b. at Barnstable, Mass. Nov. 23, 1677. She purportedly d. at Tolland Feb. 21, 1763, Æ 86, although her death is not recorded in the Tolland records and no gravestone can be found at Tolland among those of her husband and children. Some believe Elizabeth subsequently lived with one of her married children in New York State and died there.

Ichabod's father Hope Lothrop's family as well as Ichabod's own family is recorded in the town of Tolland, Connecticut as Lothrop and both Ichabod and his father Hope wrote their handwritten wills under the surname of Lothrop and signed their names by the surname of Lothrop. The surname Lathrop did not appear until shortly before the Rev. War when a descendant of the extended Samuel Lothrop family of Norwich, Conn. became convinced that the real surname of their immigrant New England ancestor, Rev. John Lothrop last of Barnstable, Mass. was "Lathrop." Samuel Lothrop who settled in Norwich by circa 1680 was of Rev. John Lothrop's family by his first wife.
