Eleventh Generation

1088. Stephen RICHARDSON Sr. (*) was born on 14 January 1652 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. Excerpt from "Amos Richardson of Boston and Stonington" (Rosell L. Richardson, New York, 1906):

"Stephen Richardson, son of Amos (1623-1683) and Mary, was born in Boston, MA in 1652. He owned a house lot in Stonington, CT in 1670, even though he was only eighteen years old. He married Lydia Gilbert, daughter of Jonathan and Mary Gilbert of Hartford, CT. (Jonathan Gilbert was very prominent in Hartford and was Marshal of the Colony).

Stephen became well acquainted with the local Indian language and often served as an interpreter. He served in King Philip 's War in 1675-6 at the time of the Great Swamp Fight, and was probably the Quartermaster for the Connecticut troops. He was made a freeman in 1679. After his imprisonment by Rhode Island Colony in 1680 (see explanation in Amos Richardson's biography), he presented a claim to the General Court for damages.

In 1687 he was a representative from Stonington to the General Court. In July, 1689, 'Mr. Stephen Richardson shot dead on the spot one WilliamTrimmin, a notorious English decoy in the service of the French privateers.'

Stephen resided on the Connecticut side of the Pawcatuck River at Westerly. The railroad crosses very near to where his house was located, about five miles east of his father's home, the land having been purchased by Amos Richardson in 1663.

He and his wife Lydia had at least nine children. He died in about 1694 in Stonington, CT."
He died on 1 July 1695 at the age of 43 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America.
