Prussia was a member state of the German Confederation from 1815 to 1866, and from 1848 until 1849 it was part of the short-lived German Empire. After the Prussian-Austrian War, it became the leading member state of the North German Confederation in 1867. It was a leading force in the creation of the German Empire in 1871, of which it became a state.

Today, the former Prussia is part of the Federal Republic of Germany, with significant parts of its territory located in Poland and small pieces of territory incorporated into Lithuania, Russia and the Czech Republic. Friedrich Wilhelm Johann Gottlieb "Fred" KUTHLOW Sr. was born in 1824 in Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia). The identity of Friedrich Wilhelm "Fred" as a son in this family is uncertain. Friedrich "Fred" Kuthlow, b. 9 Jan 1849, (Friedrich Wilhelm's son) is thought to have been an orphan. But he listed his father's name as "Fred Kuthlow" in the records at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ridgeville, and placed his father in this family.

Della Kuthlow Kortbein's research indicates that this "Fredrick Kuthlow" was a son of Wilhelm Ludwig and Christina (Schutt) Kuthlow, but she is not certain. His parentage must be confirmed.
