Seventh Generation

74. Samuel D. PETTINGILL (*) was born on 12 July 1753 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. His birth date is based on his age at the time of his death as listed in the records of The Van Wormer (Griswold) Cemetery in Fort Ann Township, NY. Based on a date of death of 15 Oct 1840 and his age as "ae 88y 3m and 4d," his birth date calculates as 11 Jul 1852. But the MyHeritage.com website lists his birth date as 12 July 1853, and his Christening date as 15 Jul 1853.

Most researchers report that the son of Samuel and Martha Jackson married Martha Pratt, and their children were Silence, Levinay (or Livinia), Hannah, and Jerusha. Robbi Hoy lists the children of Samuel and Martha (Unknown) as Silence, Levinay, Hannah and Permelia (with a birth date of 13 June 1788--the same as the Permelia in Samuel and Hannah Ann Gilbert's family). The known children of Samuel and Hannah Ann Gilbert are Permelia, Clarissa, Relief and William.

The 1790 Census for Mohawk Township, Montgomery County, NY contained a household of "Samuel Pettingill." That household consisted of 1 "free white males of 16 years & upwards, including heads of households;" 1 "free white males, under 16 years;" and 2 "free white females, including heads of families." Living in the adjacent two households were the families of Martin Pettingill and Joseph Pettingill. Not too far away were the families of Benjamin Pettingill and another Joseph Pettingill. It is not known of if any of these families were related to the Samuel Pettingill in our family.

The 1810 Census for Fort Ann, Washington County, NY contains a listing for "Samuel Pettingal" and his household consisted of 1 male, under 10; 1 male, 26-44; 4 females, under 10; 2 females, 10-15; and 1 female, 45 and over. Samuel would have been 56 at the time and it is also not believed that they had four daughters who were born after 1800. Although they were living in Fort Ann during the 1820 Census, that was probably not his family. Next door was the household of John Taylor, possibly related to Moses Taylor, the eventual husband of Samuel's daughter, Permelia. A few farms away were Josiah and Ephraim Griswold and Israel Bigelow, other surnames that later became related to the family. He was baptized on 15 July 1753 in Brockton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. The household consisted of 1 male, age 16-26 (William, 22); 1 male, age 45 and above (Samuel, 68); and one female, age 45 and above (Hannah 68). Samuel appeared in the census in 1830 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. He was listed as "Samuel Pettingal" and his household consisted of 1 male, age 20-30 (his son, William, about 32); 1 male, age 70-80 (Samuel, 78); and 1 female, age 80-90 (his wife, Hannah, 78). He was living next door to Moses Taylor, the husband of his daughter Permelia. He died on 15 October 1840 at the age of 87 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. The cemetery records list his date of death as 15 Oct 1840, but Evelyn Taylor's research lists it as 15 Oct 1836. 1840 is believed to be correct. He was buried in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. in the Van Wormer (Griswold) Cemetery. Located on a hill on the West side of Tripoli Road, near the intersection with Burquist Road. Take the hill up Rocky Road and turn left to the Cemetery, which is surrounded by a stone wall.
Hannah PRATT (*) and Samuel D. PETTINGILL (*) were married about 1778 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. The MyHeritage.com website lists their marriage location as "Worthington, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay.)

75. Hannah PRATT (*) was born on 18 May 1754 in Stoughton, Stoughton Township, Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. Her birth date is listed as 18 May 1782 in Evelyn Taylor's research; that is not possible because her oldest daughter was born in 1779; it is possible that she meant 1752.

The 1830 Census lists her in the age range of 80-90; therefore, she was apparently born between 1750 and 1760. The cemetery records list her age as 82 at the time of her death, indicating a birth year of about 1754. She appeared in the census in 1810 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. She appeared in the census in 1820 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. Hannah appeared in the census in 1830 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. She died on 27 August 1836 at the age of 82 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. (Evelyn Taylor's research lists her date of death as 27 Aug 1836, and the gravestone list confirms that.) She was buried in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. in the Van Wormer (Griswold) Cemetery. Located on a hill on the West side of Tripoli Road, near the intersection with Burquist Road. Take the hill up Rocky Road and turn left to the Cemetery, which is surrounded by a stone wall. (The MyHeritage.com and FamilySearch.org websites list her surname as Pratt, but other sources list it as Gilbert. It must be confirmed.

It is very possible that Hannah Pratt was married to another Samuel Pettingill. The Find-a-Grave Website lists a Hannah Pratt (1757-1826) as having married Zephaniah Shaw (1752-1829) in 1776 and a Samuel Pettingill (?-1840) in 1809.)

Her name was spelled as "Levinay" in the "Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915" and the "Massachusetts Town Clerk Vital and Town Records, 1626-2001." It is spelled "Lovina" on the MyHeritage.com website.

Permelia PETTINGILL was born on 13 June 1788 in Worthington Township, Hampshire County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. (Her name is listed as "Permela" on her gravestone, and as "Permelin" in some sources. But it may have been "Permelia" because her sister, Clarissa, named one of her daughters Permelia.)

(Her birth place is listed as Fort Ann in some sources, but the family supposedly lived in Worthington Township, MA at the time of the 1790 Census.) She appeared in the census in 1820 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. She appeared in the census in 1830 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. Permelia died on 25 November 1834 at the age of 46 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. She probably died in Fort Ann, New York, because her children were born there and Moses married his second wife there and was still living there during the 1840 Census.

The whereabouts of most of her children is not known. By the time of the 1840 Census, Philander had married, Samuel and Edgar were living with their father and his second wife, and Hannah had died; but the other children--Caroline, Eli, Gorton, Harriet and Rohana--cannot be accounted for.. She was buried in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. in the Van Wormer (Griswold) Cemetery. Located on a hill on the West side of Tripoli Road, near the intersection with Burquist Road. Amy and Nathan Brown are buried beside each other." Amy was buried in Fonda, Pocahontas County, IA. in the Cedar Township Cemetery.

vii.

Relief PETTINGILL was born on 28 March 1792 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. He died on 20 June 1810 at the age of 18 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. (The Griswold Cemetery records list her age at her death as "18 yr 2 mo 23 da.") He was buried in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY. in the Van Wormer (Griswold) Cemetery. Located on a hill on the West side of Tripoli Road, near the intersection with Burquist Road.
