2. Karl Friedrich "Charles" BACKHAUS⁷ was born on 23 September 1834 in Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).^{7,8,9,10,11,12} (His name was listed as "Charles" in the 1880 Census.) He was Lutheran about 1868 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹³ He is listed as member number 55 in the church records. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.⁹ Charles appeared in the census in 1880 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰ He was listed as "Charles" and his household consisted of himself; his wife, Hannah; and their children William, Elizabeth and "Millie." His occupation was listed as "Farmer." He died on 28 February 1897 at the age of 62 in Monroe County, WI.^7,8,11,12 (His date of death is listed as 28 Feb 1897 in the death records of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, but as 26 Feb 1898 in the church cemetery records.) He was buried on 3 March 1897 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.^8,12 in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Karl Friedrich "Charles" BACKHAUS and Johanna "Hannah" MATZKE were married about 1865.⁹ Johanna "Hannah" MATZKE, daughter of Johann MATZKE and Wilhelmine UNKNOWN (MATZKE), was born on 7 June 1842 in Karrof Bei Labes, Kreis Regenwalde, Pommern (Pomerania) State, Preussen (Prussia).^8,9,11,14,15 (Her birth place is now part of Poland. Regenwalde is now named "Resko," and Karrof Bei Labes is now named "Lobez." This is a map of Pommern Province.)

A sponsor at the baptism of her daughter Albertine was Albertine Matzke. It is not known what relation she was, but she could have been her mother or sister. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.⁹ She was listed as "Hannah." She appeared in the census in 1880 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰ Hannah was Lutheran in 1900 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁶ and was listed on the Memberbership Roster of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She died on 22 June 1902 at the age of 60 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.^8,15,17 She was buried on 25 June 1902 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.^8,15 in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.
