97. Joseph BIGELOW was born on 17 April 1783 in Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont Colony, British Colonial America.^{4,11,12,13,14,15} (His name is listed as "John H." on the Oak Grove Cemetery records.

(The Bigelow Society source lists his date of birth as 15 Feb 1787 in Mt. Holly, Clarendon County, VT. The 1900 Census for his son Dan listed his birth year as 1783, and the Oak Grove Cemetery records list his birth date as 17 Apr 1783.)

Notes from The Bigelow Society: "Joseph 6 BIGELOW was born 15 February 1787 at Clarendon, VT. When he was a child, the family moved to Essex county, New York, settling near Crown Point. Joseph became a shoemaker, and in later life, a farmer. About 1810 he married Catherine Chilcott, who was born 16 May 1794 perhaps in Vermont, though other sources say the Chilcotts were from New Jersey. They lived at Crown Point, then at Westport, and had a family of fourteen children, several of whom died young. Their births are recorded with accuracy in the Bigelow genealogy.

On the 1850 census, Catherine, presumably because of failing health, was living at Westport with son Amos, while Joseph (age 65) and the youngest children were in the home of son Oscar. Catherine died on 19 November 1856 and is buried at Stephenson cemetery, Westport. About the same year several of the surviving children migrated to Monroe county, Wisconsin, taking up land near the village of Tomah, where descendants live to this day. Joseph also moved to Wisconsin."

He served in the military about 1812.¹⁶ He served in the War of 1812. He died on 14 May 1859 at the age of 76 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^11,12,13 Joseph was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^4,16,17 in the Oak Grove Cemetery. His was the fourth recorded burial in the cemetery.

Joseph BIGELOW and Catherine CHILCOTT were married about 1810.^4,11,12 Catherine CHILCOTT was born on 16 May 1794 in Vermont.^4,11,12,13 (Her name may have been "Chilcutt.") She died on 19 May 1856 at the age of 62 in Westport, Essex County, NY.^4,11,12,13 She was buried in Westport, Essex County, NY.⁴ in the Stevenson Cemetery.
