38. Carl Ludwig BRANDAU was born on 5 April 1924 in Monroe County, WI.16,29,72 He appeared in the census in 1930 in Wellington Township, Monroe County, WI.8 He was listed as "Charles." He appeared in the census in 1940 in South Ridge, Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.30 Carl died on 1 April 2009 at the age of 84 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.72

Obituary Notes: "Carl L. Brandau, 84, of Tomah and formerly of Wilton, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the Tomah Health Care Center. He was born April 5, 1924, to Henry and Minnie (Birkholz) Brandau in Monroe County. He was united in marriage to Evelyn “Peg” Baus on Aug. 28, 1946, in Norwalk. Carl was a lifelong resident of the Wilton and Tomah areas, working on his family farm and for Tri-State Breeders. He later established Brandau & Son Livestock, buying and selling cattle in Wisconsin and surrounding states. Through Carl’s business, he made many lifelong friends. His greatest pleasure was being involved in his granddaughters’ lives, supporting and loving them unconditionally. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 63 years, Peg; a daughter, Diane Snyder of Tomah; a son, Sonny (Laura) Brandau of Tomah; his beloved granddaughters, Stacy (Marty) Deutsch, Kari (Mark) Wenholz, Amy (Brian) Brohmer, Jessie and Carly Brandau; his precious great-grandchildren, Ashley Kunesh, Jenna (Jed) Lyons, Zach Kunesh, Trevor Wenholz, and expected great-granddaughter Avery Jo Brohmer; three sisters-in-law, Emogene Brandau, Ella Mae Brandau and Margaret Parsons; a brother-in-law, Norbert Baus; a special cousin, Bob Brandau; many nieces and nephews with whom he shared a special bond and also many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Minnie; two sisters, Irene Brandau and Edna Buckholz; three brothers, Otto, Harvey and Harold (Dick) Brandau; a sister-in-law, Jo Alice Brandau, and a brother-in-law, Maynard Buckholz.

A funeral service was held Monday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tomah. Pastor David T. Brandt officiated. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Hom, 801 E. Monowau St., and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Carl’s children would like to thank their mother “Peg” for her unwavering love and support of their father over the years. A sincere thank you is extended to Dr. Erdman and the Tomah Care Center staff for making Carl’s final days comfortable for him. And lastly, a special thank you to our family and friends for their unending prayers and support at this difficult time."

Carl Ludwig BRANDAU and Evelyn G. "Peg" BAUS were married on 28 August 1946 in Norwalk, Monroe County, WI.1,72 Evelyn G. "Peg" BAUS, daughter of Christ BAUS and Katherine FLOCK, was born on 30 June 1928 in Monroe County, WI.73 She died on 8 February 2010 at the age of 81 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.73

Obituary Notes: "Evelyn G. “Peg” Brandau, 81, of Tomah, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at the Serenity House in Tomah. She was born June 30, 1928, to Christ and Katherine (Flock) Baus in Monroe County, WI. She was united in marriage to Carl Brandau on Aug. 28, 1946, in Norwalk. Together, Carl and Peg made their home in Tomah.

Her passion for caring and love for people led her on her life’s journey. Peg was instrumental, along with Lester Gordon, in opening and operating the first nursing home at Tomah Memorial Hospital, where she worked for many years. In her later years, she worked for Burnstad’s, past her 80th birthday, where she was a “fashion” fixture in the Ladies Department. If she knew you, she loved you! Her “special” group of friends was diverse in age, but they shared a special bond with her. Peg’s five granddaughters were her life. They shared so many special times with her. Each one had their own unique connection with her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by a daughter, Diane Snyder of Tomah; a son, Sonny (Laura) Brandau of Tomah; her beloved granddaughters, Stacy (Marty) Deutsch of Lakeville, MN, Kari (Mark) Wenholz of Mesquite, TX, Amy (Brian) Brohmer of Tomah, Jessie (Mitch Elsing) of Tomah and Carly Brandau of Tomah; her precious great-grandchildren, Ashley Kunesh of St. Paul, MN, Jenna (Jed) Lyons of San Clemente, CA, Zach Kunesh of Winona, MN, Trevor Wenholz of Mesquite, TX, and Avery Jo Brohmer of Tomah; dear devoted Ruby; a sister, Margaret Parsons of Janesville; a sister-in-law, Ella Mae Brandau of La Crosse; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Carl; a sister, Loretta (Hebert) Schmitz; two brothers, Norbert “Nub” (Anna Belle) Baus and Lambert (Garland) Baus; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Roland Lydon, Eldon Parsons, Otto (Jo) Brandau, Dick (Emogene) Brandau, Edna (Maynard) Buchholz and Harvey Brandau.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Liberty Village assisted living where Peg resided and the staff at the Serenity House for their kindness and compassion. A special thanks to Peg’s family and friends for their prayers and support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Tomah. The Very Rev. Steven J. Kachel will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of the Mass. A prayer service will be held Friday at the funeral home at 8 p.m."
