Pascal Enos TAYLOR was born on 26 March 1805 in Waterford Township, Caledonia County, VT.10,11,12,20,24,35,36,37 Pascal's great-great-great-great-grandfather, John Taylor, came to Massachusetts with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. He died at sea in 1645, when he went down with the Phantom Ship of Longfellow's poems. His ancestral line went from John, John, Samuel, Samuel, Oliver, Vine to Pascal. (His name was spelled "Paschal" in the 1860 and 1870 Census' and in the diary of his son Alonzo. His gravestone spells it "Pascal.") . This is the bottom of the page of the census form and the rest of his family cannot be located in the census (possibly there was a page lost). Based on what we can learn about this family through other sources, the following children would have been expected to also be living with their parents in 1850: Ruth, age 12; Byron, age 10; Vine, age 8; Rebecca, age 5; and William, age 2.
From the research of Ron Benson: "Apparently the Pascal Taylor family joined up with other families from Monroe County, NY who migrated to Monroe County, WI in the 1850's. Pascal's sister, Jane (Taylor) Thompson, was one family that settled in Monroe County, WI prior to 1860. A biography of Alonzo Hamilton Taylor, which includes information from his diary, mentions the death of his mother while on the way from New York to Wisconsin: 'Alonzo Hamilton Taylor was born on July 30, 1834 in Penfield, New York. His family joined the western migration, settling in Tomah, Wisconsin in 1858. His mother, Alzina Tripp Taylor did not survive the journey and is buried at Saint Joseph Barracks, Michigan. Alonzo continued on to Denver, Colorado in 1859 and became a shopkeeper.' Reconstructing history using the records that have been located, suggests that after the death of Alzina, reported as being in October 1854, the Pascal Taylor family remained in Berrien Co., MI (the location of Saint Joseph Barracks) for a period of time. It appears that Pascal proceeded on to Wisconsin to join up with his sister Jane's family by 1858. At the time of the 1860 census, Pascal Taylor was living with the family of his brother-in-law G. A. Thompson and his sister Jane (Taylor) Thompson. It appears that Pascal was not living with his children. Further research identifies the following locations of the children around 1860: · Jane (Taylor) Hipp, age 28, living with her husband, at Berrien Co., MI (census records) Apparently all of the children of Pascal Taylor had remained in Berrien County, MI (except for Alonzo, who had moved to Colorado), while their father had gone ahead to Wisconsin. There is no way of knowing the conditions and understanding upon which Pascal Taylor left his children behind in Michigan when he went on to Wisconsin. What we can reconstruct is that his three older daughters had married by 1860 and each had taken in one of their younger siblings (Rebecca was living with Naomi, William was living with Jane, and Wellington was living with Ruth). One possibility would be that he went ahead with the understanding that he would find land and get things ready for them to join him along with some of their extended family (the George and Jane Thompson family). Some sources have identified a daughter Margaret (born around 1850), but we have not yet located any records with a Margaret Taylor associated with this family. We have also not seen Wellington Taylor included in any lists of children of Pascal and Alzina Taylor prepared by others, although the fact that he lived with his sister Ruth at the time of both the 1860 and 1870 census (at least through the age of 18) certainly fits with him being her younger brother, and it follows the pattern of the three youngest siblings going to live with the three older sisters after they had married and their father had moved to Wisconsin." .
