Makins, prominent Oakland teacher for many years, and sister of Mrs. Alice Amsden of San Jose. Mrs. Makins died Sunday at Merritt Hospital, Oakland. A teacher for 22 years in California, Mrs. Makins had spent the last 17 in Oakland, where she specialized in the instruction of underprivileged children, with marked success. Born in Odessa, Minn., Mrs. Makins was reared in Milbank, S.D., and came to California as a bride in 1906. She taught in Santa Cruz, before going to Oakland. Besides her sister, Mrs. Amsden, she leaves another sister, Mrs. Nina Murphy of Shoshone, Idaho, and a brother, Charles J. Vandervort of Palo Alto."
