Will homesteaded the land with his brother Lewis in Lac Qui Parle County, purchasing the land in October 1881 for $1.25 per acre. The land was sold five years later for $412.50 per acre. William lived in Milbank, SD, after the land sale, until he moved to Santa Cruz, CA, in 1908. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Milbank, Grant County, SD.¹⁷⁵ He lived at his home in Milbank, Grant County, SD in October 1906.⁶⁴ Will appeared in the census in 1910 in Santa Cruz, Branciforte Township, Santa Cruz County, CA.¹⁷⁵ His household was at 87 Windham Street.
