Second Generation

2. Christoph Herman "Chris" GOLDBECK was born on 25 April 1842 in Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).1,2 Before 1874 he was a shepherd in Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).1 Between 1874 and 1919 he was a wagon and wagon wheel maker in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.1,2 Chris emigrated in 1874 from Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).1,3 They missed their first boat to the US, but were very lucky because it sank. The second voyage was a rough one, and many of the passengers were sea sick. Those who died were thrown overboard.

(The 1910 Census listed his emigration year as 1880. He could not be located anywhere in the US in the June 1880 Census, so he may have emigrated after that. Family history lists the year as 1874, but that may be wrong.) He appeared in the census in 1900 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.4 He appeared in the census in 1910 in Wilton, Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.3 His occupation was "Wagon Maker, Wagon Shop." Chris died on 10 January 1919 at the age of 76 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.1 of a heart attack. He was buried in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.1 in the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Christoph Herman "Chris" GOLDBECK and Auguste Bertha KLUGE were married on 11 November 1864 in Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).1 (The 1910 Census indicated that they had 12 children, of whom 10 were living at the time.) Auguste Bertha KLUGE, daughter of (Unknown) KLUGE and (Unknown) UNKNOWN (KLUGE), was born on 24 December 1849 in Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).1 Between 1865 and 1920 she was a farmer in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.1 while her husband worked as a wagon maker.

She milked the cows by hand and churned butter. Their cream was made into butter, which they traded for groceries at the grocery store. They weren't given cash, but instead received a "due bill." Their main meat was pork. On their bread they used goose lard, sorghum and honey, and they ground their own coffee from browned barley.

They had kerosene lamps and lanterns, and their fences were made of rails or tree trunks. Their lunch pails were empty lard pails. Chris made all of their furniture.

Her parents stayed in Germany with her sister, Pauline. Pauline often wrote to Augusta Bertha, but she could not read or write. Her husband, Chris, was well educated so he led the family in daily devotions and helped the children that went to high school in Wilton with their studies.

One day, news came from Germany that Pauline had died. Augusta Bertha was very sad, and she never heard from her family in Germany after that. She emigrated in 1874 from Germany.3 (The 1910 Census listed her emigration year as 1880.) Auguste appeared in the census in 1900 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.4 She appeared in the census in 1910 in Wilton, Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.3 She died on 1 March 1920 at the age of 70 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.1 Auguste was buried in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.1 in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
