Michael Friedrich "Fred" KORTBEIN Sr. was born on 19 November 1822 in Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).^{4,5,11,13,14,15} He emigrated on 15 October 1855 from Germany.¹⁶ to New York City. He was the first in his family to emigrate, a year before his parents and siblings. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.⁸ Fred appeared in the census in 1875 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁷ His household consisted of 5 males and 5 females. He died on 20 September 1875 at the age of 52 in Norwalk, Monroe County, WI.^4,6,14 He was buried on 22 September 1875.⁴

Michael Friedrich "Fred" KORTBEIN Sr. and Auguste Christiane Friederike WEBER were married in 1861 in Watertown, Jefferson County, WI.^10,18 Auguste Christiane Friederike WEBER¹³ was born on 14 November 1832 in Altenfliess, Brandenburg Province, Preussen (Prussia).^{6,14,19,20,21} (She may have been a sister of Robert Weber, who married Auguste Brieske.)

(Her birth place is reported to be Altenflus, Prussia. No such place can be identified and it is believed to have been Altenfliess. There were two cities named Altenfliess--one in Friedeberg/Neumark, Pomerania and the other in Regenwalde, Pomerania.) She emigrated in 1860 from Altenfliess, Brandenburg Province, Preussen (Prussia).^6,14,19 with her father and lived with her two brothers near Watertown, WI. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.⁸ Auguste appeared in the census in 1875 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁷ She appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹³ Her husband had died in 1875 and she was listed as the Head of Household. She was Lutheran in 1889 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.²² She and her children are listed in the Communion Register of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Auguste appeared in the census in 1900 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁹ She was living with her son Carl Louis. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.²³ She died on 8 March 1922 at the age of 89 in Norwalk, Monroe County, WI.^6,14,20 Auguste was buried on 13 May 1922 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁰ in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.
