CENSUS1880: Page 345 Town of Millston, Jackson Co., WI birth place: OH Age: 45 Occupation : Farmer BIOGRAPHY: Civil War Veteran Lewis died on 30 May 1901 at the age of 67 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.26,37,39,40 Obituary Notes: "Lewis Lamb, an old soldier who lived near Rudd's, died last Thursday of diseases contracted in the army. Mr. Lamb was about 67 years old and leaves a wife, 10 children, 5 brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss. Comrade Lamb enlisted in Dec. 1861, in the 10th Wis. Battery, was afterwards transferred to the 8th Wis. Light Artillery, and from this service was discharged for general disabilities. He re-enlisted in the 43rd Wis. Vol. Inf. and was discharged June 24th, 1875. Mr. Lamb was born in Columbia county, Wis., and was an early settler in Monroe county. The funeral services were held at the Kirby school house and the remains were laid away in what is known as the Smith cemetery. Lewis Premo, of Warrens, had charge of the service and Rev. Josiah Phillips of Warrens officiated." He was buried in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.23,28 in the Lincoln Township Cemetery. There are two gravestones here. The older upright stone says "Louis A Lamb died May 30, 1901 77 years 9 months 15 days." The newer stone lying downs says "Lewis A Lamb, 1833 to 1901." The stone reading "Catherine L. Lamb, 1860 to 1933" is probably his 3rd wife Kate Lapp Organ. Lewis Alexander LAMB and Mary Caroline PETERS were married on 30 September 1873 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.26,27,41 Mary Caroline PETERS, daughter of Samuel B. PETERS and Rachael A. UNKNOWN (PETERS), was born in 1847 in Pennsylvania.26 She died on 6 April 1884 at the age of 37 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.26,42 She was buried on 8 April 1884. Lewis Alexander LAMB and Catharine "Kate" LAPP were married on 29 October 1884 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.27,46 Catharine "Kate" LAPP, daughter of Wilhelm LAPP and Margaret UNKNOWN (LAPP), was born about 1857 in Neillsville, Weston Township, Clark County, WI.19,21,24,28,36,47,48 (Her gravestone lists his year of birth as 1860. However, the 1860 census listed her age as 4, the 1870 as 13, and the 1880 as 23.. Her obituary does not list her birth year. Based on the census records, she must have been born about 1856 or 1857.) She appeared in the census in 1860 in Neillsville, Weston Township, Clark County, WI.47 (Her age was listed as 4.) She appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.19 (Here age was listed as 13.) Kate appeared in the census in 1880 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.21 She appeared in the census in 1910 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.49 The 1910 Census indicated that she had 6 children, of which all 6 were living. She appeared in the census in 1930 in Rockford, Rockford Township, Winnebago County, IL.48 She was living with her son Alvin and his wife. Kate died on 28 February 1933 at the age of 76 in Monroe County, WI.36 Catherine Lamb, a resident of this community for many years, passed away on Tuesday, February 28.
Mrs. Lamb was a kind and loving mother and a kind neighbor, always thinking of others instead of herself. She leaves to mourn her demise two children by a previous marriage, Leslie Organ of Tomah and Rose Hieser of La Crosse, Mrs. Wm. Lamb of Tomah, Mrs. Maurice Nance of Rockford, Illinois, Alvin of Rockford and Lewis of Tomah. Seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two brothers, Wm. Lapp of Neillsville and Nickolas of Tomah, and one sister Maggie of Idaho, two half brothers, Bennie and James of Duluth also survive. Services were held at the Kirby church on Friday, March 3. The Rev. R. Johnson, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, officiated. Misses Edna Sowle and Evelyn Schroeder sang 'Rock of Ages' and 'Abide with Me' with Mrs. R. Johnson accompanying." She was buried in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.23,24 in the Lincoln Township Cemetery.
