Descendants of Joachim Marten

Joachim Marten and his wife, Dorothea Mullers, were born in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Province of Prussia in the mid-1600's. One of their three sons, David, and his wife, Sophia Ilsabe Sepperl, had a son named Johann David who was born in 1737 in Spornitz. Johann David, in turn, had a son named Johann Christian, Sr. who, with his wife Anna Elizabeth Helmke, had two sons and a daughter who emigrated to America in the 1850's and lived in Monroe County.

Their oldest child, August Christian Ludwig (1828-1890) and his wife, Hanna Maria Christina Sophia Marten, passed through Germantown, Wisconsin, and then settled in Tomah Township, where they raised their eight children.

Dorothea Elisabeth Marten (1831-1906) and her husband, Johann Joachim Christian Helmke, also passed through Germantown and then settled in Wilton Township, where they raised their seven children.

The youngest child, Christian Friedrich David Marten (1837-1905), and his wife, Katharina Maria Dorothea Karoline Linke, married in Lincoln Township, but then lived in Tomah Township, where they raised their nine children.

It is believed that all of the many Marten family members who lived in Monroe County descended from Joachim and Dorothea.

However, there was another group of Marten famly members who settled in Jackson County, and they may have been relatives from Prussia.
