Juanita, or Nita as she was known to most, was born on September 27, 1955 to Forrest and Joy Hart in Tomah, WI. She was the middle child of five siblings. Nita was a 1973 graduate of Tomah High School. She then went on to marry and have children. Nita and Richard T. Hancock were wed on July 12, 1980. They had three children, Michelle Gebhardt (Randy), Randy Hancock, and Nicole Steen (Benjamin).

Nita was a loving wife and mother. Her children and husband would come home from school and work to a tidy house and a home cooked meal. Nita enjoyed baking and she was as sweet as her sweet tooth. She loved chocolate chip cookies, and there was ALWAYS a bag of Hersheys Kisses with almonds in the house. Nita was primarily a homemaker, but she also helped with the family moss farming business in various ways such as bookkeeping and moss packaging.

At age 43, Nita became a grandmother to Riley Hancock and welcomed another grandson, Reese Gebhardt, four and a half years later. She excelled at being Grandma! She was the classic grandma always having treats in the house, spoiling her grandkids, and loving them unconditionally.

Nita was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 53. She underwent chemotherapy, which caused irreversible cognitive impairment, but left her cured of cancer. Just over two years later, Nita became a grandmother once again to two beautiful girls, Maddie Gebhardt and Sage Steen.

Nita was an avid scrapbooker, creatively putting her life experiences to paper. As a quiet and patient person, she delighted in putting together jigsaw puzzles. She appreciated flowers and took to flower gardening. Nita enjoyed shopping while her husband played chauffeur. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her family.

The end of Nita’s life was difficult, but her husband Richard devoted his days and nights to caring for her. Nita’s family is deeply saddened by her loss, but know she is now free of suffering. We miss you so much!

Nita was predeceased by her father and her younger sister Pamela Rezin. She is survived by her mother, her husband, her three children, her four grandchildren, her siblings Wayne Hart, Cindy Lambert (Douglas), and Laurie Stonger, and several nephews and nieces.

A celebration of life will be held at the Tomah-Warrens Sportsmans Alliance at 26143 Broadway Ave, Warrens, WI on May 18, 2024, from 9 am until 11 am. We invite family and friends to join us for a sweet and a cup of coffee as we remember the beautiful, kind soul that was Nita Hancock. The Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home is assisting the family.
