He was not married.

Included in the Census were 1 male, age under 5 (his youngest brother Stephen Roswell); one male, age 15-20 (his brother Lucius); one male, age 20-30 (himself); one female, age 5-10 (his sister Rhoda); two females, age 15-20 (his sisters Susan and Sarah); one female, age 20-30 (his sister Lucinda); and one female, age 40-50 (his mother, Rhoda). He died on 2 October 1861 at the age of 53 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.^{55,76,107,108} John was buried in Irasville, Waitsfield Township, Washington County, VT.⁷⁶ in the Irasville Cemetery. BIXBY were married on 27 May 1834 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.^55,88,89,106 According to an article in the Vermont Historical Library, "The Griggs and Bixby families were 'pioneers' of Fayston. Both families were strong and active in the Methodist faith." Lydia B. BIXBY, daughter of Theophilus BIXBY and Anna FISKE, was born on 23 February 1812 in Roxbury, Suffolk County, MA.^{55,74,76,106,109} She appeared in the census in 1840 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.⁷³ She appeared in the census in 1850 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.⁷⁴ Lydia appeared in the census in 1860 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.⁷⁵ She appeared in the census in 1880 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.¹¹⁰ She was living with her daughter Anna and her family. Her name was listed as "Lydia Ward." She died on 1 September 1887 at the age of 75 in Fayston Township, Washington County, VT.^55,76,106 Lydia was buried in Irasville, Waitsfield Township, Washington County, VT.⁷⁶ in the Irasville Cemetery.
