Fourth Generation

67. Ensign Mark WHITE Sr. was born in 1689 in Acton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.2,8,37 The Mayflower Society in the 1930's accepted a claim that Mark White was a son of Peregrine. They then ruled that family tradition, not acceptable evidence, was used to base the claim. The Society in 1973 ruled that Mark White was an immigrant, and not a descendant. They no longer accept new members based on his lineage.

From the research of Margaret McEuen: "I am a descendant of Mark and Elizabeth MOUSALL (spelled with a U in all the records I've checked) through their son, Thomas. They had 8 children and all married and had children, except John, their oldest.

There is no record of Mark being in America until Nov 1712 when he married Elizabeth in Charlestown, Mass. Not in any probate records, land records or other court records.

The National Genealogical Society printed a study in their Quarterly [61:243-8] in 1973 which showed all the records searched and stated they could find no link to Peregrine White Jr., including his will, where he left everything to his wife, Mary and her heirs. If he had had children one would think they would have at least been mentioned.

There was an old White Genealogy printed in 1895 when the fad was to link oneself to a famous person. It used hearsay as evidence and the fact that Mark White only 'fit' into Peregrine White's family and that is how the link started. The author never considered that Mark White could have been an immigrant to Charlestown, a very busy port at that time.

The LDS records show that link, but they don't have to prove any sources. They just have to connect people and sometime just connect people with like surnames without evidence."
