He emigrated in 1775 from London, Middlesex County, England.45 About 1780 he was a manufacturer of Damask linen in Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America.63,64 John appeared in the census in 1790 in Pomfret Township, Windham County, CT.53 His household consisted of 1 "free white male, 16 years & upwards, including heads of families;" 4 "free white males, under 16 years;" and 4 "free white females, including heads of families." The first person was John Riches Smith; the second group consisted of his sons James, Ebenezer and two unknown sons; and the third group consisted of Dorothy Bacon Smith and their daughters, Rhoda, Sarah and Susanna. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Pomfret Township, Windham County, CT.65 His household consisted of 1 male "over 16 and under 26" (either Ebenezer or James), 1 male "over 26 and under 45" (John), 2 females "under 10" (Susanna and Elizabeth), 1 female "over 10 and under 16" (Sarah or Rhoda), 1 female " over 26 and under 45" (his second wife, Mary), and 1 female "over 45" (unknown, but probably his widowed mother-in-law).
