In a 14 October 2024 email, he said he was "doing well" with the cancer and was given six months to live. He suffered heart failure in September 2025 and was under a doctor's care. He was doing well with both issues in October 2025, but had been diagnosed with macular degenertion in both eyes. His half-sister, Barbara (Serp) Griggs, and her husband Gary visited him in Maine on October 11th and 12th and found him to be in excellent spirits, despite his health issues. He spends much of his time in his hobbies of wood-carving (small animals and fish, drink coasters, etc.) and painting (animals and landscape). He is an accomplished and very talented artist.
