Emma Friederica PREUSS and Johann Augustus "Gus" BERNHARDT were married on 3 July 1888 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^11,15,16,17 Their witnesses were Fred "Bernhard, " one of his brothers, and Henry Klinge.

August (Gus) and Emma raised their family of eight children on a farm in Bear Creek, an area southwest of Tomah. Their children included Herbert, Edward, Leo, William, Arnold, Gilbert, Martha and Lillie. They lived on the same farm for about forty years. Gus was active after his retirement and often walked the four miles to Tomah. In 1929, Gus and Emma moved to Tomah, where they lived their remaining years. Johann Augustus "Gus" BERNHARDT, son of Konrad BERNHARDT and Ernestine Karolina ROEDER, was born on 22 June 1859 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.^{11,14,18,19,20} (He is listed as "Augustus" in the 1860 Census.) (His confirmation record lists his birth date as 22 June 1861, and the Oak Grove Cemetery records list his birth year as 1861.)
