Hugo Emil PROTZ⁵ was born on 25 February 1880 in Preussen (Prussia).^5,20 He appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.⁵ He was naturalized on 16 March 1909 in Wisconsin.²¹ He registered for the Military Draft in 1917 in Monroe County, WI. ²⁰ Hugo died on 27 February 1950 at the age of 70. He was buried in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.²² in Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Hugo Emil PROTZ and Martha Auguste A. BRAUN were married on 8 July 1903.¹⁴ (Her surname is listed as "Brown" in the Monroe County marriage records.) Martha Auguste A. BRAUN was born (date unknown).
