August was interested in education for the youth and was very active in getting the school year changed from eight to nine months. All of the Schamens children attended Cooper School, Dixon #3. Some of the years at the school, the teacher had as many as 35 to 45 students in a one-room school, with all eight grades and did their own janitor work. The pupils either walked the two and one-half miles twice a day or drove a team of horses. They sometimes wonder just who really did invent frozen dinners, as theirs--carried in one-half gallon syrup pails--were frozen until noon many times, in cold weather.
