The 1900 Census listed it as July 1862. In the 1920 Census, his age is listed as 63, indicating a year of birth of about 1857. It is believed that 28 July 1860 is correct.)

(The Oak Grove Cemetery records spell his surname as "Sonnenburg.") He emigrated in 1881 from Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).^2,24,26 after deserting from the German army. (The 1920 Census listed his emigration year as 1882.) He appeared in the census in 1930 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁸ He was a widower and was listed as a "Boarder" in the rooming house of William Herman. Fred died on 29 December 1943 at the age of 83 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^13,24 He was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁵ in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
