154. Lafayette F. SWEET was born on 14 December 1846 in Hinesburg, Chittenden County, VT.29,39,42,46,102,103 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Whiting, Addison County, VT.44 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Whiting, Addison County, VT.41 Lafayette served in the military between 4 August 1862 and 24 June 1865 in Virginia.22,46,47,104 He served in Company B, 1st New York Heavy Artillery.

He received a gunshot wound at Fort Stephens, July 12, 1864, the effects of which he suffered throughout his life. On another occasion he came near to losing his life when his cartridge box caught the force of a musket ball, which he saved as a relic of the war.

The company in which he enlisted was transferred from infantry to artillery in 1863, and he served there for the remainder of the conflict. He participated in the battles at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, Cedar Creek, and many others of note. He was detailed as a sharpshooter in 1864, and was engaged in this perilous work for several months. He was a brave soldier, and when arms were laid down he returned to his home in Vermont.

He received a military pension of $8 per month for "wound, right side of face."

He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.28 He appeared in the census in 1880 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.29 Between 1897 and 1909 Lafayette was a rural mail carrier in Monroe County, WI.103,105 He appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.39 He and his family lived at 218 Juneau Street. His household consisted of Lafayette, Annie, and two of their children, Martha and John. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.56 His household was on Hollister Avenue and his occupation was "Clerk in Frieght Depot." Lafayette died on 11 December 1914 at the age of 67 in Monroe County, WI.22,42,103,106,107 of a bladder infection. He was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.103,104,106,107 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Lafayette F. SWEET and Anne Mary "Annie" DOBBINS were married on 31 December 1867 in Whiting, Addison County, VT.29,39,42,46,56,102,105,108,109 The 1900 Census indicated that they had 5 children, of whom 4 were still living. (They may have married in 1868.) Anne Mary "Annie" DOBBINS, daughter of John DOBBINS and Caroline Amelia MCGINNES, was born on 8 June 1848 in Moriah, Essex County, NY.22,29,39,46,106,109 She appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.28 She appeared in the census in 1880 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.29 Annie appeared in the census in 1900 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.39 110

"Mrs. Lafayette Sweet, who was carrying the mail on Rural Route #1 during her husband's vacation, suffered very serious injuries last Friday near the end of the route. A tug hook broke and the team started up at the approach of another team from behind. The tongue dropped down and Mrs. Sweet was thrown between the wheels and the buggy box and was dragged a short distance.

She was taken home in an unconscious condition. She was badly bruised and it was several hours before she fully recovered consciousness. She was attended by Dr. Quigg."
