Lois appeared in the census in 1940 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁵⁰ She died on 1 October 2000 at the age of 76 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰²

Obituary Notes: "Lois A. Ness, 76, of Tomah and formerly of Kendall, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000. She was born Oct. 6, 1923 to Irvin and Minnie (Jones) Root at Sparta, Wis. She was married July 26, 1955, to Gordon Ness in Dubuque, Iowa.

Lois graduated from Sparta High School. She continued her education and received two years of teacher's training at the Teachers College at La Crosse. She later earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education. During her teaching career, she taught in Wisconsin (including her first teaching assignment at the Ridgeville school from 1944 to 1947), Minnesota, Texas, Montana and Indiana. She concluded her career in the Mauston School District. Lois taught for over 40 years.

She was an active and faithful member of the Bible Ev. Free Church in Tomah, and a member of the Prayer and Share Group at the church. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Corrine (Jay) Olsen of Lake Delton and Pamela Ness of Brookfield; five sons, Richard (Rebecca) of Joplin, Mo., Eric (Tami) of Milwaukee, Bradford (Betsy) of Wausau, Philip (Cheri) and Timothy (Peggy), all of Kendall; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Marita Root of Downers Grove, Ill., and Ruth Ann (Ivan) Wilson of Racine; two brothers, Harold (Ruth) Root of Minneapolis, Minn., and Norman Root of Onalaska; and a sister-in-law, June Root of Tomah. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Wesley.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 11 A.M. at the Bible Ev. Free Church, Tomah. Pastor Timothy J. Erickson will officiate. Burial will be in the Fountain Lutheran Cemetery in the Town of Fountain." She was buried on 4 October 2000 in Fountain Township, Sauk County, WI.¹⁰² in the Fountain Lutheran Cemetery.

Lois Arlene ROOT (`~) and Gordon William NESS were married on 26 July 1955 in Dubuque, Dubuque County, IA.^102,646 Gordon William NESS, son of Milo Olaus NESS and Nettie Mae JOHNSON, was born on 6 August 1924 in Portage, Columbia County, WI.¹⁰² He appeared in the census in 1940 in Beaver Dam, Dodge County, WI.⁶⁵³ Between 1956 and 1987 he was a teacher and school administrator.¹⁰² Gordon died on 14 October 1993 at the age of 69 in Rochester, Olmstead County, MN.¹⁰² He was buried on 18 October 1993 in Fountain Township, Sauk County, WI.¹⁰² in the Fountain Lutheran Cemetery.
