Eleventh Generation

119. Moses TAYLOR was born on 8 January 1785 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, New York Colony, British Colonial America.31,32,33,34,35,36 "Fort Ann is a beautiful rural community whose history is full of fascinating anecdotes. The town lies (10 miles from the Vermont border, about 125 miles north of Albany) on what is known as the war-path of the nation, and has been the scene of many war parties from early Indian raids through the Burgoyne and Carleton expeditions during the Revolution. Fort Ann was also the site of a very important Revolutionary War battle that saw the nation's new "Stars and Stripes" flown for the first time in battle. The battle, which took place on July 8, 1777, was of great strategic importance and helped America win its independence."

The identity of the parents of Moses is not known. The 1790 Census in Granville Township, Washington County, NY, contained the household of Medad Taylor, consisting of 1 male, 16 years and older, 1 male under 16 years (Moses would have been 5), and 1 female (abbreviated as 1-1-1). Medad's family lived a few households from James Pratt, possibly the father of Moses' second wife, Azubah. James' family consisted of 1-1-3.

Medad's household was also listed in the 1800 Census in Granville Township, and consisted of 1 male, age 10-15 (Moses would have been 15); 1 male, age 26-45; 1 female, age 10-16; and 1 female, age 26-45. It is very possible that Medad was the father of Moses.

The 1790 Census in Argyle Township, Washington County, NY, contained the household of John Taylor, consisting of 3-1-4. And the 1790 Census in Westfield Township, Washington County, NY, contained the individual households of Nathan (2-1-1), Samuel (1-1-1) and Joseph Taylor (1-0-1); the families of Nathan, Samuel and Joseph were again listed in 1800, but in Hartford Township, Washington County.

(The research of Pat Andrus indicates that the parents of Moses were Nathan Taylor and Hannah Gilbert Taylor.) He served in the military in 1812.37,38,39 in the Revolutionary War. He later served in the Civil War. His widow, Azubah, received a military pension of $8 per month for his service in the War of 1812.

(Moses was not listed in the 1810 Census for Fort Ann, and it is not known where he lived at that time. The only Taylor listed in Fort Ann was John, whose household consisted of a man and woman, both age 16-25, and two sons, under age 10. Interestingly, next door to John was the household of Samuel "Pettingal," very likely the father of Permelia, the first wife of Moses. It is believed that Moses and Permelia married in about 1809, based on the birth years of their children.) He appeared in the census in 1820 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.39,40 His household consisted of 4 males, under 10 (probably Gorton, Samuel, Philander and Elanthan); 1 male, 16-26 (unknown); 1 male, 26-45 (Moses); 2 females, under 10 (probably Hannah Ann and Rohana); and 1 female, 26-45 (his wife, Permelia). Moses appeared in the census in 1830 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.39,41 His household consisted of 1 male, age under 5 (Edgar); 1 male, age 10-15 (probably Samuel); 2 males, age 15-20 (probably Gorton and Philander); 1 male, age 40-50 (Moses, 45); 1 female, age 10-15 (probably Hannah Ann); 1 female, age 20-30 (probably Rohana); and 1 female, age 40-50 (Permelia, 42). He appeared in the census in 1840 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.39,42 His household consisted of 1 male, age under 5 (Pratt Moses Taylor, 1); 1 male, age 10-15 (Edgar 14); 1 male, age 20-30 (Samuel, 26); 1 male, age 50-60 (Moses, 55); and 1 female, age 45-50 (his second wife, Azubah, 42). He appeared in the census in 1850 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.43 His household consisted of Moses, 67; Azubah, 53; Pratt Moses, 11; and Azubah, 6. Moses appeared in the census in 1855 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.44 His occupation was "Mechanical." He appeared in the census in August 1860 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.45 He lived in Monroe County after moving from Fort Ann, NY, after August 1860.37 Moses and his second wife, Azubah, initially lived with their daughter and son-in-law on a farm that was owned in the 1980's by Bob Rogge. They "moved to Oakdale later in life to claim bounty land given to him for service in the War of 1812." Moses apparently also wanted to live near his son, Samuel P. Taylor, who, according to his obituary, had moved to Oakdale in April 1857. Moses died on 12 February 1869 at the age of 84 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.32,33,46 He was buried in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.32,33,47 in the Oakdale Township Cemetery.

Moses TAYLOR and Permelia PETTINGILL were married about 1809 in Washington County, NY.2,32,37,40,48,49 (Permelia was not listed with her parents in the 1820 Census in Fort Ann, so it is assumed that she married Moses before then.)
Permelia PETTINGILL, daughter of Samuel D. PETTINGILL and Hannah PRATT, was born on 13 June 1788 in Worthington Township, Hampshire County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.31,32,36 (Her name is listed as "Permela" on her gravestone, and as "Permelin" in some sources. But it may have been "Permelia" because her sister, Clarissa, named one of her daughters Permelia.)

(Her birth place is listed as Fort Ann in some sources, but the family supposedly lived in Worthington Township, MA at the time of the 1790 Census.) She appeared in the census in 1820 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.40 She appeared in the census in 1830 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.41 Permelia died on 25 November 1834 at the age of 46 in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.32,36,39,42 She probably died in Fort Ann, New York, because her children were born there and Moses married his second wife there and was still living there during the 1840 Census.

The whereabouts of most of her children is not known. By the time of the 1840 Census, Philander had married, Samuel and Edgar were living with their father and his second wife, and Hannah had died; but the other children--Caroline, Eli, Gorton, Harriet and Rohana--cannot be accounted for.. She was buried in Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.39,50 in the Van Wormer (Griswold) Cemetery. Located on a hill on the West side of Tripoli Road, near the intersection with Burquist Road. Take the hill up Rocky Road and turn left to the Cemetery, which is surrounded by a stone wall.
