5. Henry D. WORDEN was born on 6 November 1822 in Yorktown, Westchester County, NY.^3,4 WORDEN FAMILY GENEALOGY (from John Rector to Arlyn Bernhardt, 4/2003)

Generation No. 1

This has been a fascinating project embarked upon by my sister and me in 2002 and this is what we found in our search for our ancestry through records, word of mouth, Internet information and walking through several cemeteries. I am John Rector and my sister is Merrylin Pedersen (Rector). We are two of five children of Gladys Vestina Rector (Worden). We will start this presentation with my mother's great grandfather Henry D. Worden and what we know about him.

1. Henry D. Worden born November 6, 1822 in Yorktown, Westchester Co., New York and died at home December 6, 1881 in Wilton, Monroe Co. Wisconsin. He was married to Ursula B. Burroughs on January 18, 1846 in Villenova, Chautauqua Co., New York. Henry is buried in the Worden Burroughs Family Cemetery on County Truck AA in the township of Ridgeville, Monroe Co., Wisconsin. His tombstone still stands and reads with the above death date along with his age of 59 years one month. He was a farmer by trade and appeared not to have moved after his arrival with his family in the mid 1850's. Henry was not documented on the 1855 Wisconsin census. His farm was located just north of Wilton of County Trunk A. Henry was the son, we believe, of Justus H. Worden and Lois Greman as information received make this a correct fit but not a connecting document has been achieved at this time. This information came from Donald Nolder whose mother lived with her grandfather who was a son of Justus H. Worden from Cattaraugus Co. New York and is buried in Allegeny New York. Ursula B. Burroughs born February 3, 1827 in Otisco, Onondaga Co., New York the daughter of Samuel Burroughs and Naomi Faulkner. Ursula died May 14, 1909 at the home of her daughter Urana Hickox in Kirby, Monroe Co., WI. Ursula was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Tomah, Monroe Co., WI.

Documentation:
A. Federal Bureau of Land Management Land Patents Act. Henry purchased 40 acres of land through this act on February 1, 1858 (document #9550) in Monroe Co. Have copy of this document from the Internet as well as one to his brother Sylvester for 120 acres dated February 1, 1862 (document #14048). This is the family farm where Henry lived until his death in 1881. The two parcels are the 160 acres shown on the 1877 plat map of Wilton Township.
B. 1860 Federal census of Monroe Co. WI lists Henry at age 35 in the Wilton Township along with his wife Ursula at age 33 and 7 of his 12 children. The first five of the children were born in New York and were attending school while the last two were born in WI and were under 5 years old.
C. 1870 Federal census of Monroe Co. WI lists Henry at age 47 in the Wilton Township along with his wife Ursula at age 45 and 6 of his 12 children. The three oldest are no longer living in the house while two knew children are listed as being born in WI. Missing from the census is Aboh, a twin brother of Levi who died just over 1 year old and for some strange unknown reason Malthea, a daughter born in 1868, was omitted from the census.
D. 1880 Federal census of Monroe Co. WI lists Henry at age 58 in the Wilton Township along with his wife Ursula at age 54 and 4 of his 12 children. These are the last four of his children, including Malthea and all being born in WI.
E. Probate copy of Henry Worden's estate filed by his wife Ursula as Henry died intestate in Wilton, WI. Mention is made of 9 of his children. Excluded were Delbert, Aboh and Alice, the last two known dead. All of the living children except the two youngest were married at the time of filing May 17, 1883.
F. Copy of the military record of Henry who served in the Civil War as a volunteer at age 40 with Company I, 8th Regiment of the Wisconsin Infantry. His volunteer enlistment was on December 29, 1863. His physical features were listed as 5' 11" tall with blue eyes, straight brown hair and sandy complexion. Discharge date was September 5, 1865.
G. Petition for widow's pension by Ursula to the Department of the Interior based on the service of Henry in the military in the Civil War. The petition documents the marriage of Henry to Ursula Burroughs on January 18, 1846 at Villenova, Chautauqua Co., NY. Also listed are the surviving children under 16 years of age listing Ruth, Malthea and Jim with their birth dates. Rose A. Aney and Lillie V. Worden witnessed Ursula's petition. Ursula's sister Roselia N. Gibbs, as there was no wedding license or certificate, gave proof of marriage. It states that Roselia is the only living witness to their marriage. Included is an affidavit April 15, 1884 from Samuel Burroughs, Ursula's father, with testimony as to the cause of death. Samuel states that he has known Henry the last 45 years. Another affidavit from Henry's doctor states that Henry died at his home in Wilton, WI.

12 xi. Malthea S. Worden born May 19 1868 in Wisconsin and died after 1917. Married (1) Sprague S. Gilson December 26, 1884 and (2) Alfred M. Harp October 3, 1903.
13 xii. James A. Worden born May 29, 1871 and died after 1917. Married Bertha M. Liefke May 31, 1897.
(Another child listed in the 1860 census in Monroe Co. WI Wilton township may be a daughter of Henry Worden or his brother Sylvester or another closely related Worden from New York. Hennetta Worden was listed as 15 years old born in New York and living as a domestic with the John Cottsell family. She later married a John Cottsell on November 17, 1862 in Monroe Co., WI. His parents were listed as John and Ann Cottsell from Ireland which is not the same family that she was listed with in 1860. Unfortunately, Hennetta did not list her parents on the license. They moved and have not been found. Samuel Hancock and Sarah Worden witnessed the marriage. Sarah Worden, the oldest daughter of Henry Worden, later married Samuel Hancock.)

2. Sarah Worden born in New York on April 14, 1847 and died on February 21, 1878. She married Samuel C. Hancock. Sarah was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Tomah, WI. Samuel Hancock was born in England on September 12, 1834 and died August 16, 1882. Samuel was also buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Tomah, WI. Samuel purchased four parcels of land through this act as 160 acres on March 10, 1857 (document #7573), 77.49 acres on February 1, 1858 (document #8758), 40 acres on January 15, 1858 (document #9782) and 37.63 acres on February 1, 1858 (document #9783).

A. 1860 census of Monroe Co., WI has Sarah living with her parents at age 13. Samuel was living alone and listed as a farmer at age 26. Both were listed in Monroe Co. Wilton Township. (Other Hancocks were also listed close by but have not been tied to Samuel. They could include his parents and siblings.)
B. 1870 census of Monroe Co., WI has Sarah and Samuel married with two oldest children residing in Monroe Co. Wilton Township. Samuel was listed at age 36 and Sarah at age 23.
C. 1880 census of Monroe Co., WI shows Samuel at age 46 with his daughter and three sons living in Monroe Co. Wilton Township.

E. Sarah was listed in the probate of Henry Worden's estate.
F. Sarah was listed as deceased in the probate of Ursula Worden's estate.

3. Delbert Worden born about 1848 in New York and presumed dead before 1883. He shows up once in the 1860 census at age 12. No other information has been found. Delbert was not listed as a living child on the probate of Henry Worden's estate filed by his wife Ursula.

4. Mary Worden born about 1849 and died before 1910. Based on probate records Mary married a Bowman and lived in South Dakota.

6. Ellen Melissa Worden was born on March 29, 1863 in New York and died March 14, 1936. Ellen was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Tomah, WI. She married Daniel Harp on July 6, 1873 in the town of Lincoln, Monroe Co. WI. George F. Hickox and Lottie Miller witnessed the marriage. Daniel Harp was born in McHenry Co. IL on May 5, 1849 and died October 19, 1937. He was also buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Tomah, WI. Daniel's parents were John Harp and Eva Miller.

She married George Franklin Hickox on August 2, 1874 in the town of Wilton, Monroe Co. WI. The marriage was witnessed by Daniel Harp and Abbie Lombard. George Franklin Hickox was born about 1848 in Kenosha Co. WI. His parents were Harvey M. Hickox of CT and Almancy Headley of OH.

He married Lillian Vestina Aney on December 25, 1882 in Wilton, Monroe Co., WI. Charles A. Aney and Ruth Worden witnessed the marriage. Lillian Vestina Aney was born January 2, 1867 at Adrian, WI and died September 24, 1926 in Wilton, WI. Lillian is the daughter of John Jesse Aney of New York and Harriet Jane Millis of Pennsylvania or Michigan or New York.

Sprague was born July 9, 1861 in Tomah, Monroe Co., WI and died July 19, 1896. His parents were William Gilson of New York and Elizabeth A. Allen of New York. Sprague was also buried in Jacksonville Cemetery.

12. Malthea S. Worden born May 19, 1868 in Wilton, Monroe Co., WI. After the death of her sister in 1884, Malthea married (1) Sprague S. Gilson on December 26, 1884. One of the witnesses was Ursula Worden. After Sprague's death, Malthea married Alfred M. Harp on October 3, 1903. Alfred M. Harp was born in McHenry Co., Illinois and was the son of Jacob Harp and Caroline Bliven. Witnesses to the marriage were Ursula Worden and Clara York, wife of the person pronouncing marriage.
