143. Martin Luther "Matt" VANDERVORT was born on 26 September 1844 in Blenheim Township, Schoharie County, NY.^{16,46,76,109,111,121,218,219} (He may have been born in Oneida County, NY.) About 1860 he was a mail carrier in Geddes Township, Onondaga County, NY.¹¹³ He appeared in the census in 1870 in Eaton Township, Monroe County, WI.^91,115 (Eaton Township was later named Grant Township.)

(He was not living with his parents during the 1865 Census in Oconomowoc Township, and it is not know where he lived at that time.) Matt appeared in the census in 1875 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.⁶⁹ His household consisted of 2 males and 2 females. He lived on his family farm in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI after July 1875.¹¹⁶

According to the records of the Bureau of Land Management, Martin purchased an 80-acre piece of land located in the southwest corner of Township 19 North, Section 26, Range 2W on July 30, 1875. At the time of the purchase, the farm was located in Lincoln Township; it is now part of Grant Township.

He also purchased an 80-acre section immediately to the west of the above parcel, as well as a 55-acre section to the north. The properties eventually became the family farm of Will Vroman. Between 1880 and 1920 he was a farmer in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.^140,219 Matt appeared in the census in 1880 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.⁴⁶ He appeared in the census in 1900 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.¹³⁸ He appeared in the census in 1910 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.²²⁰ Matt appeared in the census in 1920 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁴⁰ He died on 7 July 1925 at the age of 80 in Black River Falls, Jackson County, WI.^{16,76,219,221}

Obituary Notes: "Martin Vandervort, resident of Monroe County for many years, died at his home in Black River Falls on July 7 at the age of 81 years. Mr. Vandervort was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting in New York State as a member of Co. C, Ninth Regiment, N.Y. Heavy Artillery. (He was wounded at Cedar Creek, VA.)

He came with his parents to Monroe County in 1865 and lived in this county until Nov. 7, 1921, when he and his wife moved to Black River Falls to be near their sons.

His last illness was brief and death came unexpectedly. The funeral was held at Black River Falls and his body was brought to the LaGrange Cemetery for burial. Besides his wife, Mr. Vandervort leaves two sons, Eugene R. and Emile of B.R.Falls, two daughters, Mrs. Roy Gillette, Duluth, Minn., and Harriet (Ernest) Dickinson, Tomah." He was buried in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.^{16,73,74,75,117,219} in the LaGrange Township Cemetery. Matt served in the military.⁵³ and was awarded a pension of $8 per month for a wound to his right leg tibia bone.

Martin Luther "Matt" VANDERVORT and Phebe Jeanette "Nettie" HUNT were married on 17 December 1867 in Watertown, Jefferson County, WI.^16,29,76 Phebe Jeanette "Nettie" HUNT, daughter of William B. HUNT and Harriet SOPER, was born on 27 December 1851 in Indiana.^{35,46,138,140,219,222,223} (She may have been born on 2 Dec 1851.)

(Her death certificate spelled her name as "Phoebe". The 1880 Census shows her name as "Mettie" and her age as 24, indicating a year of birth of about 1856. The 1920 Census lists her age as 68, which was correct, and her place of birth as Indiana.) She appeared in the census in 1860 in Omro Township, Winnebego County, WI.²²⁴ She appeared in the census in 1875 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.⁶⁹ Between 1880 and 1900 Nettie was a homemaker in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.^219,225 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.⁴⁶ She appeared in the census in 1900 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.¹³⁸ Nettie appeared in the census in 1910 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.²²⁰ She appeared in the census in 1920 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.²²⁶ She died on 26 July 1932 at the age of 80 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^16,60,76,219 Her cause of death was listed as "cerebral hemorrhage." Nettie was buried on 28 July 1932 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.^{16,74,75,117,149,172,219} in the LaGrange Township Cemetery.
