2828. John ROOTE II (*)(|)(:) was born on 26 February 1608 in Badby, Northamptonshire, England. The original family name was Roote. The Rootes were Norman French and migrated to England when the Huguenots were persecuted in France. John Root(e), our Puritan ancestor, emigrated from a place called Badby. His father was deceased and he lived with an uncle--a brother of his father--and was adopted. His uncle was a man of wealth, advanced in years, and a jealous opponent of "popers." According to the impression of the writer of the Root history, Jesse Root, he was a man of nobility. He (his father) insisted that John, our ancestor should go into the Parliamentary Army under Cromwell to fight against Charles I and the Catholics. John had an aversion to war and chose instead to join a company of Puritans who were coming to this country. When he arrived, he came to Farmington, CT and was one of its first settlers. He was baptized on 24 September 1608 in Northamptonshire, England. in the Farmington Congregation. He emigrated in 1640 from Badby, Northamptonshire, England. He came from Badby on the ship Hercules with a group of Puritans and settled in Farmington Township, Connecticut Colony. John was a farmer and weaver of cloth.
In 1637, he had served as a soldier in the Pequot War. When he arrived in the US in 1640, he lived in Salem, MA, then Hartford, CT, and then (on May 9, 1654) in Northampton, MA. He was noted as one of the eight pillars of his church, and also served as a selectman. He was a freeman in 1657. In 1672, he had an estate valuation of 26 pounds sterling. About 1669 he was in Farmington Township, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America. with an estate valuation of 166 pounds sterling, according to the 1670 U.S. Census in Connecticut. He signed a will on 22 April 1684 in Farmington Township, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America. Will: "I John Roote sen. of the town of Farmingtown do make this my last Will and Testament: I give to my wife Mary Roote a Constant Comfortable maintenance to be paid to her by my Executors during her Widowhood, and £20. But in Case she marry again, I give her £20 more, and then the Constant maintenance to cease. I doe solemonly charge my sons Joseph & Caleb, as long as the care of their Mother shall be incumbent upon them, to carry very dutifull and tenderly towards her & see from time to time that she want nothing for her comfortable support, and I hope that the Overseers of this my Will will have an eye to this care. To each of my sons which are already married, 20 shillings; & to my gr. Children 5 Shilllings. I give to my daughter Mary, the wife of Isaac Brunson, £15. I do Confirm to my son Steven Roote the 20 acres of Land, which I engaged upon his Marriage with his Wife that now is. I give to my son Joseph both my Looms with all the Tackling. To my sons Caleb & Joseph I give the remainder of my Estate. My sons Caleb & Joseph to be Executors, and Mr. Hooker and Caleb Standly to be Overseers. He was buried in Somers, Tolland County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America. in the North Cemetery. Mary KILBOURNE (*)(|)(:) and John ROOTE II (*)(|)(:) were married on 10 January 1640 in Farmington Township, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America. 2829. Mary died in 1697 at the age of 78 in Farmington Township, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America.

"I, Joseph Root of Farmingtown, do make this my last will and testament: I give to my wife Ruth Root the use and profit of 1/3 part of my houseing and homelott where I now live during the time of her widowhood, and also the use and profit of 1/3 part of all other of my real setae during her natural life (1 parcell of land, about 60 acres, which I have in the southward division between the mountains, only excepted); also I give to her my sd. wife, to be at her own dispose, forever, £30 money or personal estate equilvalent thereto. Unto my daughter, Elizabeth Root, besides what she now hath and claims to call her own, I give of my personal setae (of such things as she shall chose) the value of £100 current money; also I give to her the use and improvement and profit of 2/3 parts of all my real estate, viz. houseing and lands, during her natural life or day of marriage if it shall so happen; also the use and profit for the sd term of that third part given to my sd. wife in case she be living when my sd. wife's time therein is expired. To my daughter Mary Lee, besides what I have already given her, £20 current money. Unto my five grandchildren, children of sd. daughter Mary Lee, I give to each of them £5 as current money. Unto Joseph Olmsted, now living with me, provided his life be continued until he arrive at the age of 21 years and shall during that time continue faithfully in my service or the service of my son Joseph Root after my decease, then I give him 50 acres of ye land which I have in Farmingtown and in the division of land southward from the reserved land between the mountains, land that was laid out on the west of John Brounson, Sen. decease; and in case he the sd. Olmsted shall not have heirs, then my will is that the sd. t0 acres of land shall revert and belong unto my three children, Joseph, Elizabeth and Mary, in equal proportion between them. Unto my only son Joseph Root, besides what I have already given him, I give all the remainder of my real estate, whatsoever it be, to him and his heirs forever, together with the reversion and fee simple of all that real estate the use thereof for a time I have given to my sd. wife and to my daughter Elizabeth Root.
