Thirteenth Generation

5656. Sir John Charles ROOTE I (*)(|)(=)(:)(/)193,1103 was born on 24 June 1576 in Milton Malsor, South Northamptonshire Borough, Northamptonshire, England.265,1035,1036,1106 He was christened on 7 March 1612 in Ashford Town, Ashford District, Kent County, England.193 He died on 29 October 1615 at the age of 39 in Milton Malsor, South Northamptonshire Borough, Northamptonshire, England.193,265,624,1035,1106,1185,1186,1187 Life Sketch from the Root Genealogical Records, 1600-1870: "The researches of Mr. Jesse Root of Berlin brought to light the fact that John Root, who settled in Farmington, came from a small parish in Northamptonshire, England, by the name of Badby. It was supposed by the compiler of this work that the branch of the family first settled in Hartford, and afterwards removed to Northampton, was nearly allied to that in Farmington, and that Thomas of the former places was either a brother or near kinsman of John of the latter.

The parish records of Babdy examined by Mr. Russell Harper Root of New York, seem to indicate that they were brothers. The first record found in the old parish book was of the marriage of John Roote and Ann Russell (sic, Rushall) in the year 1600. He lived and probably died, at Badby. The record of their children runs as follows: I. Mary, bap at Badby Dec 21. 1600. II. Susannah, bap at Badby Oct 18, 1603. III. Thomas, bap at Badby, Jan 16, 1605. IV. John, bap at Badby, Feb 26, 1608.

Besides this, there is a record of the death of Thomas Roote on the 5th of April, 1609. Whether this was the father or brother of John Roote who married Ann Russell, is not known. (Note: Thomas was John's father.) No further records of the family were found, from which we may reasonably infer that the family left the place, and was in all probability the same stock that emigrated to America. Thus the English records and the American traditions are in harmonious accord. The family names on the English list, and the names given by John of Farmington to his children also serve to indicate the relationship." )

Life Sketch: "John Roote was baptized at Milton Malsor, Northamptonshire, on 06 January 1570/71, son of Thomas Roote and Ales (Cowper) Roote. He was married to Ann Rushall on 23 July 1600 at nearby Badby, Northamptonshire. The marriage record shows that her name was Ann Rushall (not Mary Ann Russell).

Ann Rushall was baptized at Badby, Northamptonshire, on 16 July 1579, the daughter of Henrie Rushall and Winifred (Balle) Rushall. Proof that this is the correct Ann Rushall is found in the 1620 will of her mother Winifred (Balle) Rushall who mentions her daughter Anne Roote. Winifred was buried at Badby soon after she made that will."

(The research of Richard Ripley indicates that he died in 1640 in Badby, England.) John was buried in Milton Malsor, South Northamptonshire Borough, Northamptonshire, England.265,1106 in the Holy Cross Churchyard. Mary "Ann" RUSHALL (*)(|)(=)(:)(/) and Sir John Charles ROOTE I (*)(|)(=)(:)(/) were married on 23 July 1600 in Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.265,624,1035,1036,1185 in the Badby Parish Church, the Church of the Virgin Mary.

(The attached map is of the Badby, England. Badby is located just north of Birmingham in central England.)

5657. Mary "Ann" RUSHALL (*)(|)(=)(:)(/)254,265,1103 was born in July 1579 in Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.265,624,1035,1036 (Her given name may have been Ann.)

(Some sources list her parents as William Francis Russell and Eleanor Juliana "Anne" Forester, but that is believed to have been incorrect. To wit: John Roote was baptized at Milton Malsor, Northamptonshire, on 06 January 1570/71, son of Thomas Roote and Ales (Cowper) Roote.

Winifred was buried at Badby soon after she made that will." She was baptized on 16 July 1579 in Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.265 She died after July 1614 at the age of 35 in Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.193,1188

iii.

Deacon Thomas ROOTE I (=) (/)193,1036,1103 was born on 16 January 1605 in Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.181,193,624,1035,1036,1106,1189 He was christened on 16 January 1605 in Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.193,1036 He emigrated about 1637 from Badby, Daventry District, Northamptonshire, England.1036,1104,1187,1190,1191 He originally came to Salem, Mass., in 1637 on the Hercules. About 1639, he moved to Hartford, Conn., and, in 1654, to Northampton, Mass.

Quote from "Root Genealogical Records, 1600-1870" written by James Pierce Root, 1870: "He was among the first settlers of Hartford, CT, where he lived for many years, and where his children were born. His name is mentioned in the list of proprietors of undivided lands in 1639, and can be found in the old graveyard in Hartford, in the rear of the Center Church, erected by the Ancient Burial Ground Association in memory of the first settlers of the city. He was a considerable landholder there, and one parcel of the land assigned to him was located on what is now (1870) North Main Street, about a mile west of the State House.

After a residence of about fifteen years in Hartford, he removed with his six sons and one daughter and settled in Northampton, Mass., on the 9th day of May, 1654, as one of the planters of what was then called Nonotuck. In the Massachusetts Colonial Documents we find that in 1659, on petition, he was appointed one of the selectmen. He was both farmer and weaver of cloth. His record of lands assigned him by the town is dated 7th Dec., 1659.

On the 18th of June, 1661, the parish church was gathered, and the Rev. Eleazar Mather was ordained as pastor and teacher of the flock. Among the eight pillars of the church thus organized was Thomas Roote. It is believed by some that he was a deacon of the church. The old Roote homestead in Northampton was on King street, opposite where the Roman Catholic church now stands, and it has only within a few years been torn down.

Thomas Roote died at a very advanced age, on the 17th of July, 1694, age 89, naming his children in his will, and mentioning that he lived with his son Jonathan at the old homestead. The name of Thomas Roote's wife is not known."

Thomas lived at his home in Westfield, Westfield Township, Hampden County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America about 1668.671 From the Chronology of Westfield: "Grants were confirmed, January 9th, (1668) to George Phelps, Isaac Phelps, Thomas Noble, David Ashley, Rev. John Holyoke, the minister, John Ponder, and Hugh Dudley on Fort side (Main street); Capt. Aaron Cook, Mr. James Cornish, Thomas Dewey, John Osborn, and John Ingersoll on South side (Little River street), to be settled with families by November 10, 1668.

Thomas Gun, John Williams, Ambrose Fowler, Jonathan Alford, bought in the Cooper tract.

John Ponder, Thomas Gun, John Root, Thomas Root, George Typer, Joseph Whiting, had homelots on south side of Main street, west of Dudley's lot.

In March Union street was laid out, also Capt. Aaron Cook opened the first tavern on Little River street."
He died on 17 July 1694 at the age of 89 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.181,624,1035,1185,1192 Thomas Root was an original proprietor of Hartford, CT, 1636, and should not be confused with a man of the same name who lived in Salem, MA. He was a soldier in the Pequot War, 1637, and received a lot in Soldiers' Field, Hartford. He was a farmer and a weaver, and owned considerable land in Hartford; one parcel was located on what is now North Main Street about a mile west of the State House. He removed with his family to Northampton, MA, in May 1654, being one of the founders of that plantation, which was then called Nonotuck. He was appointed one of the Selectmen in 1659, and was one of the eight "pillars" of the church which was organized 18 June 1661. He was buried in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America.265,1106 possibly in the Ancient Burying Ground.

Life Sketch: "THOMAS ROOT IS PROBABLY NOT BURIED HERE, BUT HIS NAME IS ON THE FOUNDERS MONUMENT AS AN ORIGINAL PROPRIETOR OF HARTFORD. He was an early member of the First Church of Hartford, his home lot being on the east side of the road to the Cow Pasture (north Main Street). He was a weaver & served in the Pequot Indian War. About 1654, he removed to Northampton, Mass. where he was one of the seven first settlers.
His children:
Joseph, (1) Hannah Haynes & (2) Mary (Holton) Burt
Thomas, m. Abigail Alvord
John b. June 10, 1646, m. Mehitabel (Johnson) Hinsdale
Jonathan, m. Ann Gull
