Karl Johann "John" BARTHELS was born on 23 June 1849 in Strahlsdorf, Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).^{5,12,19,22,24} (His surname is spelled "Bartels" in his church Confirmation Register and in the record of his marriage, but it is listed as "Barthel" in the baptism record of his son Gustav, as is Gustav's.)

(His gravestone lists his birth year as 1850.)

(His birth location is listed as "Strahlsdorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin" in his his marriage record. Other records list it as "Stralendorf.") He emigrated about 1856 from Preussen (Prussia).^16,25 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁵ His name was listed as "Charles." John was confirmed on 21 May 1865 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁴ at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.¹¹ He was living with his parents and his occupation was listed as "Farm Laborer." He appeared in the census in 1880 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^8,12,21 His occupation was listed as "Farmer."

John appeared in the census in 1920 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁶ His household was located at 1716 Kilbourne Avenue. He died on 15 December 1929 at the age of 80 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^25,27 He was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^19,28 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Karl Johann "John" BARTHELS and Louisa "Bertha" ROEDER were married on 19 November 1874 in Monroe County, WI.^{16,22,25,29,30,31} (She is identified as "Betty" in the obituary of her son, John.) Louisa "Bertha" ROEDER, daughter of Christian ROEDER and Anna TORNOR, was born on 4 June 1854 in Preussen (Prussia).^26,27,31,32 (Her birth date may have been 23 June 1850. Her gravestone lists her year of birth as 1855. The 1920 Census listed her age as 63, indicating a birth year of about 1856 or 1857.) She emigrated in July 1857 from Germany.^25,26,33,34 She appeared in the census in 1870 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹¹ Bertha appeared in the census in 1880 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹² She lived at her home in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI in August 1901.¹⁶ She appeared in the census in 1920 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁶ Bertha lived at her home in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI in April 1926.¹⁶ She died in July 1939 at the age of 85 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^25,31 She was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^19,33 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
