(His surname was spelled "Bartels" in the church Charter Member Register in 1862 and in the Communion Register in 1890. It was listed as "Bartell" in the 1860 and 1870 Census records, and as "Bartel" in 1880. But it was spelled "Barthels" in the church baptism records of some of his children. It is believed to have originally been the latter.) (He was probably an older brother of Maria "Mary" Bartels, born in 1830, who married Johann Friederich "John" Schulz, Jr.) (His birth date was listed as Aug 1822 and his age as 77 in the 1900 Census.) He emigrated about 1856 from Preussen (Prussia).8,16 The 1900 Census indicated that he emigrated from Prussia in 1860 and had been in America for 40 years. Her surname is spelled "Kiksee" in the baptism record of her son Otto in 1865 and in the church record of her death; as "Kicksee" in the marriage record of her sons John in 1874, Gustav in 1883, and Otto in 1892; in the church Communion Register in 1889; and in the church Family Register in 1890. It is spelled "Guksher" in the Marriage Registration Records of her daughter Maria; and as "Kickseher" in the church marriage record of her daughter, Maria.)
