3. Johann Otto "John" BARTHELS was born on 8 August 1827 in Stralendorf, Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).^{4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15} (His given name was listed as "Otto" in his wife's obituary.)

(His surname was spelled "Bartels" in the church Charter Member Register in 1862 and in the Communion Register in 1890. It was listed as "Bartell" in the 1860 and 1870 Census records, and as "Bartel" in 1880. But it was spelled "Barthels" in the church baptism records of some of his children. It is believed to have originally been the latter.)

(He was probably an older brother of Maria "Mary" Bartels, born in 1830, who married Johann Friederich "John" Schulz, Jr.)

(His birth date was listed as Aug 1822 and his age as 77 in the 1900 Census.) He emigrated about 1856 from Preussen (Prussia).^8,16 The 1900 Census indicated that he emigrated from Prussia in 1860 and had been in America for 40 years. However, the obituary of his daughter indicated that she and her family emigrated when she was 3 years old. She was born in March 1853, so that would have placed their emigration in about 1856.) He appeared in the census in 1860 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁵ His occupation was listed as "Farmer." John was Lutheran in 1862 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.^15,17 He was listed in the Church Register as member number 2 of the first 100 members of the congregation of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a charter member and one of the first trustees of the church.

(Information from the Marriage Registration Record of their daughter, Maria.) (According to the 1910 Census, she had 4 children, of whom all 4 were living at the time.) Anna Sophia KIEKSCHNER^2,3, daughter of Christoph KIEKSCHNER and (Unknown) UNKNOWN (KIEKSCHNER), was born on 6 October 1823 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).^{3,4,5,7,8,9,11,12,15,19,20,22,23} (She is listed as "Ann" in the 1870 Census, as "Anna" in 1880, and as "Anna" in all of the church records of her childrens' baptisms, confirmations, etc. She is listed as "Sophia" on the church record of the marriage of her son Gustav and on her gravestone.

Her surname is spelled "Kiksee" in the baptism record of her son Otto in 1865 and in the church record of her death; as "Kicksee" in the marriage record of her sons John in 1874, Gustav in 1883, and Otto in 1892; in the church Communion Register in 1889; and in the church Family Register in 1890. It is spelled "Guksher" in the Marriage Registration Records of her daughter Maria; and as "Kickseher" in the church marriage record of her daughter, Maria.)
