William Walter BASSETT Sr. "Leiden Separatist" and Margaret OLDHAM were married on 13 August 1611 in Leyden, South Holland, The Netherlands. He reportedly was one of the "Separatists" who left England and lived in Leyden, Holland as a protest against the King of England because of his intolerance of people who did not want to belong to the Church of England.

The Separatists were the primary group of people who emigrated to America on the Mayflower in 1620. It is not known if he was a member of that group. The Separatists left Holland because of a lack of good jobs for them and because they did not want to raise their children in Holland.
