(Bayes) Howard: "William Bassett was the husband of Elizabeth Unknown and Mary Tilden. Father of my 7th great-grandmother Sarah Bassett White, wife of the first pilgrim child, Peregrine White. William Bassett's origins are unknown at this time. He was among the very early arrivals in New England, arriving on the "Fortune" in 1621. His first wife Elizabeth may have also been among the passengers, either as a single woman or recently married to him. He was a freeman of Plymouth, MA, among those already admitted before Jan 1, 1632/3. By 1639 he had removed to Duxbury. He was a blacksmith by trade. He wrote his will on April 3,1667, probably dying very shortly thereafter. His estate inventory was taken May 12,1667. He married, first, Elizabeth ____, probably before 1623. Sometime after 1651, he married Mary (Tilden) Lapham, the widow of Thomas Lapham. Children (all by first marriage): William Bassett Jr, Elizabeth Bassett Burgess, Sarah Bassett White, Nathaniel Bassett, Joseph Bassett, and Ruth Bassett Sprague." He died on 4 April 1667 at the age of 67 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. Elizabeth Ann TILDEN, daughter of Nathaniel TILDEN and Lydia HUCKSTEP, was born in 1603 in Of Bridgewater, Worcestershire, England.
