Second Generation

2. Resolved WHITE Sr. (*) (~) was born on 9 September 1615 in Of Leiden, Zuid (South) Holland, The Netherlands.1,2,9 He emigrated on 6 September 1620 from Plymouth, Devon County, England.1,8 on the Mayflower. He immigrated on 21 November 1620 to Provincetown, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Colony, British Colonial America.1 After 1640 Resolved was a landowner in Scituate Township, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.8 On 3 Aug 1640 he was granted 100 acres in Scituate next to Mr. William Vassall's (his father-in-law) land. On 7 Mar 1642/43 he was granted more land in Scituate.

On 1 Jun 1658, he was made a Freeman of Plymouth Colony.

Resolved resided in Scituate during the period when his children were born--1640 to 1656. He and Judith, and perhaps some of their children, travelled to Barbados in 1656/7, presumably to aid in the settling of the estate of her father. For on 17 March 1656/7 "Resolved White of Scituate in New Plymouth in New England, gentleman, and his wife Judith, daughter of William Vassall of this Island" deeded land in Barbados, a deed acknowledged on March 20th by "Resolved White's wife" and recorded at Barbados only four days later.

The family moved to Marshfield in 1662, and were still there in 1670 when Judith died. On 3 Jun 1668, he was elected Surveyor of highways for Marshfield. On 29 May 1670, he was in the list of Freemen of Marshfield. Resolved was in Salem from 1674 to at least 1682, being a freeman of Salem in 1680. He served in King Philip's War under Capt. Manning in 1676.

He returned to Marshfield after the death of his second wife, for on 13 March 1684/5 "Resolved White of Marshfield" and sons Samuel and Josiah quitclaimed rights to an island, in return for which grantee John Branch would maintain Resolved's eldest son William. He died on 19 September 1687 at the age of 72 in Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.2,8,9,10,17 It is assumed Resolved was still living on 19 Sep 1687 when his son William quitclaimed his rights in the island to John Branch, mentioning his father, but not as "deceased," and mentioning the earlier deed of "my father Mr. Resolved White." No mention of his death nor evidence found that would support the claim of Pilgrim genealogist George E. Bowman that Resolved died between 1690 and 1694, nor the oft-found statement that he died in Salem. His age is calculated from depositions "5:9:1678" and again in June that he was about age 63.
He has Ancestral File Number B6D3-6F.2 Resolved was buried in Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.2,9 in the Old Winslow Burying Ground.

Resolved WHITE Sr. (*) (~) and Judith VASSALL (*) were married on 5 April 1640 in Scituate Township, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.1,2,4,8,10,18,19 (They may have married 18 Apr 1640 in Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Colony, British Colonial America. One account shows her marriage date as April 8, 1640. )

"Judith joined the church in Scituate on May 14 1637, but was always in sympathy with the Quaker movement. It is said that it was due to her influence that her brother-in-law, Governor Josiah Winslow, refused to persecute the sect.

Judith was a woman before her time! She was a mother and woman worthy of her times; like Wickliffe she could see, hear, and act. When the Quakers were persecuted in court she could not sit still and hear them denounced with threatened persecutions and death, but (woman as she was, who had been taught to sit in silence in the church) arose and sternly rebuked the complainer for his unchristian-like talk and behavior; and to her bravery, and influence over her husband's half-brother, Gov. Josiah Winslow, he refused his signature to the circular sent by Massachusetts Bay Colony, and that no worse persecutions are found written on the Old Colony Records, she is entitled to the grateful remembrance of the Pilgrim daughters. Green as Green Harbor be her memory (Thomas and Samuel White, Genealogy of the White Family, from 1607-8 TO 1895., Republican Press Association. Concord., CS71.W585, This book contains the history and genealogy of the William White family of Virginia., 1895.)
Judith VASSALL (*), daughter of William VASSALL and Anna KING, was born in 1619 in Stepney, Middlesex (now Greater London) County, England.2,4,9,20 This is a picture of the Mayflower Settlement.

She was the daughter of William and Ann (King) Vassall. The parentage of Judith is clearly shown in a deed of 18 July 1657 in which she, as wife of Resolved White, sells land bequeathed to her as daughter of 'William Vassall heretofore of Scituate, and late of Barbados deceased, by a will dated 13 July 1655.'" She died on 3 April 1670 at the age of 51 in Marshfield, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.2,4,9 Life Sketch: "Daughter of William Vassall and Anna (King/Kinge) Vassall of Essex, England, later Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and finally Barbados.

Sister of Anna Vassall (who died in infancy), Frances (Vassall) Adams, Mary Vassall, Samuel Vassall (who died in infancy, twin of Mary), Colonel John Vassall, William Vassell Jr., Anna (Vassall) Ware, and Margaret (Vassall) Hubbard/Hobart.
