Third Generation

11. Auguste Pauline NEAS was born on 11 November 1852 in Mieczkowo, Kries Schubin, Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).2,4,6,10,13,14,15 Her middle name is listed in the FamilySearch.org website as Theresa.

The church records of her marriage and the FamilySearch.org website list her birthplace as "Nitschkowo, Prussia." The research of Sandor Krause lists it as "Mieczkowo," in the province of Posen. She was baptized on 14 November 1852 in Exin, Kreis Schubin, Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).4 She emigrated in 1872 from Germany.14 Auguste appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.13 She appeared in the census in 1900 in Eldred Township, Cass County, ND.14 She died on 17 August 1936 at the age of 83 in Cass County, ND.15,16 Auguste was buried in Embden, Cass County, ND.6,15,16,17 in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Auguste Pauline NEAS and Friedrich Samuel "Fritz" ECKELBERG Sr. were married on 16 April 1872 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.2,6,10,13,14 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Their witnesses were Friedrich "Koepke" and Ludwig Kuthlow.

(According to the 1900 Census, they had 9 children, of whom all 9 were living at the time.) Friedrich Samuel "Fritz" ECKELBERG Sr.10,18, son of Carl JACOBS and Mearea Dorothea Friederike KOEPCKE, was born on 9 July 1844 in Klossar, Dobbertin, Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).10,13,14,15,18 (The church record of his marriage lists his birthdate as 9 July 1845, but the 1900 Census listed it as July 1844 and his gravestone lists the year as 1844.)

He was born out of wedlock and then emigrated to America with his mother in 1846. He was eventually adopted by her husband, Christoph Eckelberg, after they married in 1857.

(The FamilySearch Person Tools website lists his parents as Christian Eckelberg, G35L-N8N, and (Unknown) (GK24-9V7.)
He emigrated in 1846 from Preussen (Prussia).14,19 (The 1900 Census listed his year of emigration as 1849, but Glenn Jacobsen's research lists it as 1846.) He appeared in the census in 1860 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.20 Fritz was Lutheran in 1862 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.8,21 He was listed in the Church Register as member number 24 of the first 100 members of the congregation of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was listed on the Membership Roster of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1900. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.22 He was living with his mother and his occupation was "Farmer." He appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.13,19 His household was next to that of his mother and his two brothers.

Notes of Glenn Jacobsen: "Fritz became the patriarch of the 'North Dakota' branch of the family, and moved to the Embden, Cass County, North Dakota area where he died in 1919. Part of that branch then split off to move to western ND after some sort of a falling-out and lived (and still live) around the Dunn Center/Halliday area.

Laura (and I) grew up in Hettinger, ND, only about a hundred miles south of them. Laura's family knew they were there, but never had anything but a casual contact with them (they would have been at best 3rd cousins to her Dad, and had been split off the rest of the "Wisconsin" Eckelbergs and out of contact for quite a long time.)

There are also two more Eckelberg families in the US that also show alot of promise to being connected to the ones in Wisconsin. There is one branch in Texas and another in NE Iowa that both seem to have roots in Mecklenberg, Prussia, but we cannot make a definite connection. Probably cousins at best to Christoph, Friedrich, and Christian; the dates of birth that I have seen are too far apart to be siblings." Fritz appeared in the census in 1900 in Eldred Township, Cass County, ND.14 His occupation was "Farmer." He died on 31 March 1919 at the age of 74 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN.11,15,16,19,23,24 He was buried in 1919 in Embden, Cass County, ND.6,15,16 in the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery. Fritz has Ancestral File Number K6HN-XGV.6 (He was listed as "Friedrich Samuel Eckelberg" in the church baptism record for his daughter Alwine, as "Samuel" in the record for his daughter Emilie, as "Fritz" in the record for his daughter Auguste, and as "Friedrich" in the record for his sons Theodor and Eduard.)

"Samuel" was not a common name in Prussia in the 1800's, so he may have taken an Americanized middle name after he arrived in the U.S.
