It also lists his age at death as 76 years, 7 months, and 7 days; that would calculate to a birth date of 29 July 1847.) He appeared in the census in 1850 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.61 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.36 James served in the military about 1865.62 According to the book, "Josiah B. Vrooman, His Ancestors and Descendants," "James served in the Civil War in the First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry." Dick Freis' research of the official Wisconsin records of the Civil War failed to locate any proof of such service. About 1867 he was a farmer in Monterey, Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.36,63 He appeared in the census in 1870 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.46 James appeared in the census in 1880 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.47 His given name was listed as "Joseph." He appeared in the census in 1910 in Rock Township, Wood County, WI.45 His occupation was listed as "farmer." He died on 5 March 1924 at the age of 75 in Macoupin County, IL.30,60,64 Some family information indicates that he died in East Alton, Madison County, IL, but his Death Certificate indicates that he died in Macoupin County, IL. It listed him as "Widowed" when he died, so his second wife, Harriet Blowers, must have died before he did. The "informant" for the certificate was his son, Otto, who lived in Shipman, Macoupin County. James was buried on 8 March 1924 in Wood River Township, Madison County, IL.30,60 in the Woodland Hills Cemetery.

They lived in the Lindsey/Granton Wisconsin area in a log cabin for a while. Lindsey and Granton are northeast of Black Rivers Falls on State Hwy 10. James' second wife, Harriet, is said to be buried in Granton.

The book 'The Van Der Voort Families of Early Dutchess, Schoharie, and Delaware Counties, New York" lists her name as "Mary Caroline" and her birth place as Oneida County, NY. Her obituary lists her as "Caroline Louise" and her birth place as Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY.) She appeared in the census in 1860 in Geddes Township, Onondaga County, NY.67 She lived in Geddes Township, Onondaga County, NY on 4 September 1860.67 Carrie appeared in the census in 1865 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.73 She was living with her parents. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.46 She lived at the home of her second husband, Thomas Alva Leighton, in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI on 17 June 1880.66 Carrie appeared in the census in 1880 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.66 She lived at the home of her second husband and their family in New Lyme Township, Monroe County, WI on 22 June 1900.74 She appeared in the census in 1900 in New Lyme Township, Monroe County, WI.74 Carrie appeared in the census in April 1910 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.75 She was apparently visiting her son Will and his family during the Census in Grant Township in April 1910, because she and her family were living with her daughter Catherine and her family in Black River Falls and are recorded in that Census in May. She appeared in the census in May 1910 in Black River Falls, Jackson County, WI.76 She and her husband were living at the home of Fred Covey, a son-in-law. She appeared in the census in 1920 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.77 She was living at the home of her son, William, during the 1920 Census; her name was listed as "Caroline Leighton." Carrie appeared in the census in 1930 in MIssion Township, Lake County, MT.78 She died on 11 September 1933 at the age of 85 in Saint Ignatius, Lake County, MT.44,58

Obituary Notes: "Caroline Louise Leighton, wife of Thomas Alva Leighton, passed away at the Holy Family Hospital in St. Ignatius, Mt. at 4:35 Monday (Sept 11, 1933) after an illness of short duration. Mrs. Leighton was born in Syracuse, New York, May 8, 1848. She enjoyed good health until two weeks ago, when she became seriously ill.

Mr. and Mrs. Leighton were married nearly 55 years ago, Sept. 24, 1878. The family came west 22 years ago and have resided in the Flathead Valley for the past 10 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and two sons: Mrs. May Convey, Black River Falls, Wis.; Mrs. Maude Thorsen of St. Ignatius; R. Z. Leighton of Ronan, Mt.; and Will Vroman of Warrens, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 P.M. at the Methodist Church in Ronan, with Rev. J. E. Officey of St. Ignatius officiating in the absence of local pastor Rev. J. Ashworth. M. M. Twichel of St. Ignatius has charge of the body." (Obituary in the possession of Diana Heser Morse.) She was buried in Ronan, Lake County, MT.79 in the Ronan Cemetery.

Annie died on 8 January 1893 at the age of 24 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN.58,80 She was buried in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.58,81 in the La Belle Cemetery. She is buried near her grandparents, Henry and Lois DuBois Vroman.

She died before 5 March 1924 at the age of 78.60 The Death Certificate of her husband, James, indicates that he was a "Widower" when he died, so she must have died before he did.
